The Biltmore Estate
The Biltmore Estate is the crown jewel of North Carolina. It’s only 40 minutes away from Orchard Inn, and you can easily spend an entire day exploring the mansion, winery, shops, and expansive gardens. The home itself was constructed by George Vanderbilt in the late 1800s and is still the largest home in America to this day. When you take a tour, you’ll learn all about how the Vanderbilts and their staff once lived.
Chimney Rock State Park
Chimney Rock State Park is an icon in our state because of the stunning scenery and its historic significance. You can hike to the top of Chimney Rock from the Skyline Trail for panoramic views of the surrounding area. The rock itself is a 535 million-year-old monolith and has been owned by the Morse family for over 100 years.
Vance Birthplace
For those of you who love learning about the pioneer days of the mountains, the Vance Birthplace should be at the top of your list of North Carolina historical landmarks. The building has been reconstructed around the original chimneys and fairly accurately depicts a pioneer farmstead life. When you visit the Vance Birthplace, you’ll learn not only about some of the early locals of our area but also the life of Zebulon Vance. He was once a Civil War officer, a North Carolina governor, and a senator.
Carl Sandburg Home
Literature, poetry, and writers have shaped our nation throughout history. Many writers have retreated to our own Western North Carolina mountains for peace and solitude, including Carl Sandburg. Located about 20 minutes away from Orchard Inn, his Western North Carolina home is a great landmark to visit! Read some poetry and make your way to the Carl Sandburg Home.
The Saluda Grade
Saluda has some incredible history of its own! The Saluda Grade is the reason our area was ever inhabited. Before this important railroad, it was nearly impossible to have supplies brought here because the mountain was so steep. Once when the Saluda Grade was built, people, products, and everything in between were able to make the climb up the mountains!

Our main building was once called the Mountain Home and was built as a retreat for railroad workers and their families. The many shaded porches were a cool respite from the summer sun, and the families would spend most of their time outdoors. You are invited to do the same!
