If you’re thinking about going on a hike during your stay, consider the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. This trail stretches more than 1,100 miles across North Carolina, so you can decide for yourself how much of it you’d like to hike!

About the Mountains-to-Sea Trail

If you really wanted to, you could see nearly the entire state of North Carolina on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. This route spans 1,175 miles across the entire state, starting at the Great Smoky Mountains and ending at the Outer Banks. 680 miles of this course are on a trail, but the other 495 include backroads and even a paddle route. However, one of the best parts of this trail is right near Orchard Inn!

Segment 3: The High Peaks & Asheville

Segment 3 is the closest section of the trail to Orchard Inn and is one of our favorites! You can get to the trailhead in less than a half hour, making it one of the best hiking options in our area. This section of trail technically spans for 67.7 miles, but you can always turn around after a mile or two.

Hiking From the Blue Ridge Parkway

Segment 3 is one of the most heavily used sections of the trail, so you’ll most likely come across other hikers on your trek. Much of the trail can be found along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and there are a few spots where you need to cross the street. These are great spots to pull over and walk a bit if you’re driving on the Parkway! Here are a few of our favorites.

Visitor Center Loop

This 1.2-mile loop starts and ends at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center. With few obstacles and minimal elevation gain, this is an easy and enjoyable hike. While on the east side of the Blue Ridge Parkway, you will be on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Then, you’ll cross over to a spur loop that will bring you right back to where you started. It’s a great way to get a taste of our beautiful forest scenery!

Folk Art Center to Bull Mountain

The Folk Art Center to Bull Mountain is another great section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail to hike. This is a 2-mile round trip and is heavily used, so it is always maintained. You’ll start and end your journey at the Blue Ridge Parkway Folk Art Center, so you can even consider popping in and checking it out!
