We Planned Your Accessible Vacation in Western NC

Planning a vacation is never easy. You need to pick the perfect place to stay, where to dine, and which activities you would like to enjoy. For those with disabilities or who use a mobility aid, there’s even more to plan. Here are our recommendations for an accessible vacation in Western NC!

Here’s What You Need to Know for an Accessible Vacation in Western NC

Where to Stay

Far too often, finding an ADA compliant room means staying in a mundane chain hotel. Not at Orchard Inn! Our most recent addition includes a brand new, accessible Mountainview Suite. The suite itself has a bedroom, living area, private porch, and bathroom with heated floors. This suite is wheelchair accessible from the parking lot and includes a roll-in shower with grab bars. Enjoy stunning views of the mountains on the porch before heading inside to sip on a glass of wine by the fireplace.

Accessibility in the Inn

Because Orchard Inn was built in 1926, the inn itself is not fully accessible. Guests can use the patio entrance; there is a brick walkway and ramp to get onto the wood patio. We have a ramp that we can put over the two small stairs to enter into the dining room. You are welcome to enjoy the main building at any time, and we are more than happy to put the ramp out for you. If you are not comfortable in the main house, we will deliver breakfast to your suite.

Our Favorite Handicap Accessible Attractions in Western North Carolina

Chimney Rock State Park

Chimney Rock State Park is known for its miles of trails and breathtaking views. While the trails at Chimney Rock State Park are not accessible, you can still see the stunning views from multiple accessible spots. Drive to the upper parking lot– the parking lot itself is a scenic overlook that rivals the top of Chimney Rock. When the elevator is available, you can ride up to the Sky Lounge for more beautiful views.

The Biltmore Estate

The Biltmore Estate is located just 40 minutes away from Orchard Inn. As the largest home in America, it is one of the top attractions in our area. Because of the estate’s historic architecture, only the first and second floors are available, so discounted tickets are offered to those with disabilities. The third floor and basement do not have elevator access, but you are invited to visit the designated rest area and watch a video of the rooms you are unable to access. Some portions of the gardens are not accessible, but all the restaurants and the winery are. A complimentary wine tasting is included with each ticket, and we highly recommend taking advantage of it!
