If you know anything about Asheville, you probably know that it is one of the top destinations for craft beer in Western North Carolina. But, did you know that Asheville moonshine distilleries have gained recognition for producing their own adult beverage, too? Yes, you read that right. We said moonshine. White lightning. Hootch. Corn liquor. Sugar whiskey. Stump. Call it what you like, but you’ll want to try this mysterious spirit on your next trip to Asheville.
Right now, you might be thinking, “why moonshine?”
If so, you aren’t the only one befuddled by this unusual spirit. Most people hear “moonshine” and picture Prohibition-era mountain men dodging the law in the backwoods of our mountains. But, thanks to the following three Asheville moonshine distilleries, you’ll soon learn that is no longer the case. Take a moonshine distillery tour to learn about the liquor, its history, and how it’s made. Then, try a sample for yourself.

1. Climax Moonshine
Dubbed the “drink of defiance,” moonshine is often made by distillers who match the spunky characteristics of their product. At Climax Moonshine, that distiller is Tim Smith. Smith is a native of Climax, VA, whose bold attitude and “general disregard for authority” helped him create a legitimate business and delicious spirit. Situated in the mountains of Asheville, Climax Moonshine uses the surrounding creeks and freshwater sources to produce its moonshine. This outstanding water is the most prized ingredient in moonshine distilling, and it’s one that Asheville moonshine distilleries like Climax are proud to use.
2. Howling Moon Distillery
Next up on our list of “must visit” Asheville moonshine distilleries is Howling Moon Distillery. At Howling Moon, the history of moonshining, which dates to the Revolutionary War, is front and center. This is because the founders of Howling Moon also have ties to this history. Howling Moon distillers can trace their moonshining heritage in the western North Carolina mountains back for several generations. Because they distil moonshine with this knowledge, Howling Moon Distillery takes pride in using a recipe that is true to the ingredients and methods of their ancestors. If you’re interested in hearing about this history for yourself, be sure to contact them and set up a tour. And, if you enjoy their product, you’ll want to pick up a bottle or two before you leave. It is only sold in North Carolina!
3. Asheville Distilling Company
Some of the Asheville moonshine distilleries in the area make several types of liquor in addition to moonshine. One such distillery is Asheville Distilling Company, which also produces whiskey and bourbon. On Friday and Saturday nights, you can tour the distillery and sample each of the spirits they produce. The moonshine, which they call Troy & Son’s Platinum, is made using pure spring water from the western North Carolina mountains and Crooked Creek Corn, an open pollinated white heirloom corn. Made in small batches to ensure the best flavor, Asheville Distilling Company produces one of the best spirits in the area.
