How to Plan for the Best Day Trips in North Carolina

It’s a pretty fair statement that we all have different travel styles. Some enjoy taking their time in a place, only seeing a few things. Others are on the go more than they are in their normal lives, trying to take in as much as they possibly can. Another set of opposites when it comes to traveling is some like to stay in the town that they visit while others want to expand their searches and will drive to other places as well. We at Orchard Inn have had all types of travelers stay with us, all with varying interests.

One thing to consider the next time you are thinking of coming to the mountains is planning one or more day trips in North Carolina. Let us show you how you can plan some amazing day trips while you are here.

  1. Planning day trips in North Carolina state parks. Nearby, we have some stunning state parks for you to explore. One in particular that is highly recommended is Pisgah National Forest. There are over 500,000 acres for you to enjoy. This area is the home of the first school of forestry, which is now preserved at the Cradle of Forestry. Activities at Pisgah are almost endless and is an outdoorsman’s dream. You can go hiking, biking, climbing, hunting, and so much more. Be sure to bring a camera as it not only is beautiful there but there are so many forest animals, flowers, and trees to see.
  2. Go sightseeing via historic train. Trains have been a vital part of the growth here in the mountains and it’s natural that one of your day trips in North Carolina could be on a train. Have a look at all of the tours offered at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. They have incredible packages, tours, and annual events that are fun for the whole family. You can have a boxed lunch on the train and now you can choose between steam-powered trains or diesel trains. There is no better way to see the mountains!
  3. Take a day and see some of the natural wonders of the mountains. For those of you who love being outside and seeing the most of the mountains, then we all suggest one of your day trips in North Carolina be spent seeing as many of our waterfalls as you can. There are so many that you should devise a route to be able to see them all. Luckily, there are state parks that have a lot of them so even if you only have a few hours, you can still see our stunning falls. There is always something different to see in each season!
  4. Go for a drive through our mountain roads. When the weather is pleasant, consider taking a drive through our mountains and discover places you haven’t seen before. We are very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway which is a treasure trove for driving as well as hiking. There are points where you can stop and park to see some of the views that the parkway can give you. Also, be sure to bring a camera as you are going to want to capture every moment.
