Many times before, we at Orchard Inn have looked at and discussed the hiking trails around here in the Western North Carolina mountains. For our guests who love to hit the trails while they are here, there are plenty to choose from. You can stick close to Saluda where you can drive a bit into Asheville and explore their trails or if you are looking for somewhere else a bit further out you can head to the Pisgah National Forest. However, there is one trail that we would like to highlight that is truly spectacular, the Mountains to Sea Trail. Let’s have a look at what makes the Mountains to Sea Trail so unique and why you should add it to your trail list when you come to the mountains.
The Mountains to Sea Trail is a long distance trail (over 1100 miles) that stretches across the state of North Carolina. Specifically, it goes from the Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. While you could theoretically hike the entire thing, that isn’t usually what hikers do. The Mountains to Sea Trail is broken up into interesting and fun smaller stretches perfect for day hikers. What’s so amazing is that since it stretches the state, you could hike it in multiple weekends and at any point in the state.
While you could start in the Smokey Mountains, let’s highlight where you can hike the Mountains to Sea Trail right here in Asheville. One aspect of the Mountains to Sea Trail that is so fantastic here in Asheville is that it criss-crosses and is very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Blue Ridge Parkway is known to have some of the most stunning views here in the Western North Carolina mountains. Be sure to have a look at the interactive map on the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail website as well as their ideas for day hikes. In our area, there are 88 miles of the Mountains to Sea Trail to hike on. It all starts at the base of Grandfather Mountain. Before you start, explore around the trail a bit and enjoy the view from where you are. From there the trail will take you through meadows and then through forests. Be sure to bring your camera as we are certain you will see some amazing trees, flowers, and possible a native animal or two while you are out. Some other types of environments you will experience on our section of the Mountains to Sea Trail is a wet section of Boone Fork.
Before you decide to hike any portion of the Mountains to Sea Trail, there are a few things to know. The first is to be prepared, plan out your hike on a map and keep an eye on where you are going. If you do decide to bring your dog, just be sure they are on a leash at all times. We highly suggest taking advantage of the experiences of others and decide to take a path that has been explored before. We know that no matter which area of the Mountains to Sea Trail that you hike on, you will have a fantastic time.
