When deciding to come to Western North Carolina, there are some activities that you should research first so you can properly enjoy them. In Asheville, they have an amazing art, beer, and food scene and it’s always best to do some searching on the Internet beforehand so you can plan properly. One of the activities that many visitors like to do while they are here is to enjoy our amazing outdoor trails. The North Carolina mountains are gorgeous in any season and the best part is that there are so many ways to experience our North Carolina mountains and from many trails. Here at Orchard Inn we love recommending fantastic trails for any and every skill level so our visitors can enjoy views of our North Carolina mountains while they are here. Here are some of our favorites.
The first area of North Carolina mountains that we love to send visitors to is Rough Ridge which is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. To access this area, you drive to milepost 302.8 and from there you can enjoy some views of Grandfather Mountain, Linn Cove Viaduct, and Linville Gorge. If you hike about 1/3 of a mile you will come to a boardwalk with other great views. Continue a short 1/2 mile from there to the summit where you will get spectacular views. One thing to note is that while the trail is short it can be a tad strenuous and muddy so keep your skill level in mind when climbing.
Our next recommendation for viewing our amazing North Carolina mountains is a very popular choice, Table Rock. It has been said by many as one of the best views of North Carolina mountains as well as in the southeast. Once you arrive at the parking lot for Table Rock, the total round trip hike is 2.2 miles which makes it a great choice for those who want a quick trip and still have some gorgeous views. As with the last hike, there are parts of the hike that have some steep climbs and can be strenuous so be careful. Also know that the area is closed January-March.
Next is Max Patch Mountains. This is a section of the famous Appalachian Trail and since a good bit of it is flat, it will give you expansive views of our North Carolina mountains. This is a great place for a picnic after a quick trail hike of 1.4 miles. After, take the long loop of 2.4 miles that circles the mountain and will give you great views of Mt. Mitchell. One thing to know about this area is to almost always bring a jacket. It is usually 10 degrees cooler on Max Patch because it is usually very breezy.
Our last recommendation for great views of our North Carolina mountains is Craggy Gardens which is on the Blue Ridge Parkway. One of the best trails for views of our North Carolina mountains is the Craggy Pinnacle Trail. This is a short 1.5 mile roundtrip hike that once at the top, you will have panoramic views of the mountains. This is a great place to have a picnic but like with all hikes, be sure to bring a jacket since the top can be a lot cooler than the city. This is also a great place to see some beautiful flowers while on your hike.
