In March, college basketball fans will have an exciting reason to come stay at the Orchard Inn. This year’s NCAA Southern Conference Tournament takes place in Asheville NC from March 7th to March 10th in Asheville.  Games will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center and the Kimmel Arena on the campus of UNCA, making the Orchard Inn a convenient place to stay. This annual event includes both men and women’s basketball teams from the Southern Conference of  the NCAA competing for the title of Southern Conference Champion.  Read up on the details below and make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun!

The Southern Conference Tournament has a storied history dating back to the 1920s.  Asheville has played to host to the tournament multiple times.  Notably from 1983 to 1995 and again from 2011 to the present.  Asheville embraces the event and lends an exciting atmosphere to the tournament with sponsorships and community events.  This year the tournament makes its home at the US Cellular Center and Kimmell Arena on the UNCA campus.  For information on ticketing as well as directions to these venues, click here.

Before the action on the courts gets started, the mascots of participating teams will take a trip to brighten the days of young patients at the local hospital. This is a wonderful example of what the Southern Conference Tournament brings to the Asheville area and why its such a beneficial event.

The 2014 Southern Conference Tournament kicks off on Friday, March 7th with Education Day.  Games start at 11 am.  Games continue through Saturday and the tournament concludes on Sunday with the championship final games.  For more information on the teams in this year’s Southern Conference Tournament, including a bracket, visit the Southern Conference Tournament page, here.

The weekend’s festivities also includes an induction ceremony for the Southern Conference’s fifth Hall of Fame class on Sunday morning prior to the championship final.  The induction luncheon is by invitation only, but you’re sure to see some Southern Conference legends in attendance at the tournament.

Children can participate in the Downtown Dribble, were almost 500 kids dribble the ball through the streets of downtown Asheville.  Participants in the Downtown Dribble also have the chance to earn free tickets for Saturday’s games. Whether you have a child who wants to partake or just want to enjoy this unique “parade” through Asheville, the Downtown Dribble is great fun and a signature of the Southern Conference Tournament.
