You’ve worked hard and now it’s time to play hard. Get out and about in North Carolina and see all Saluda and Asheville have to offer. We encourage you to get involved with senior citizen travel groups and make your way here. There is plenty to do in the area for all ages.
Visiting Saluda, North Carolina is like taking a step back in time. Every downtown building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tour “The Grade,” which attracts railroad enthusiasts visiting the spectacle of railway in the town or explore the great outdoors through hiking, biking or kayaking.
There are several trails available for you to enjoy, starting with Pearson Falls. Made up of 268 acres of spring-fed streams, it’s an easy hike with a 90-foot waterfall. Pearson Falls also offers great views for bird watching and wildflower spotting. If you’re outdoorsy, we also suggest Little Bradley and Big Bradley Falls. Saluda is truly beautiful!
The next activity to add to the list is shopping. You’ll love the experience you will have when you enter the M.A. Pace General Store. It is an old-fashioned hardware and general store that was founded in 1899. A visit to M.A. Pace’s store is like taking a trip back to a much simpler life. We also recommend a stop by the Gardener’s Cottage, a shop for all seasons, and the Historic Thompson’s Store. It’s the oldest grocery store in the state of North Carolina. Finally, we have to mention the Heartwood Gallery. It has one of the best collections of pottery in the mountain region and a unique gallery of handcrafted wood, jewelry, glass, metal and original paintings.
Moving on…let’s talk about restaurants. We would be amiss if we didn’t claim the finest dining experience in the area is at the Orchard Inn. We serve dinner Thursday through Saturday by reservation only with complimentary hors d’oeuvres offered between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. We boast local, organic goods to support a movement toward healthful, fresh cuisine. We even grow our own vegetables and herbs in our onsite organic garden!
If you’d like to go out, we suggest Umi Japanese Fine Dining for an excellent sushi experience. They also offer authentic Japanese entrees and dishes from their Thai menu. There’s something for everyone at Umi.
Additionally, in the neighboring town of Tryon, North Carolina, you’ll find Overmountain Vineyards. Enjoy picturesque views as you stroll through the vineyard and take in the sights and smells. They grow five varieties of grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Petit Manseng.
