August Events in Asheville NCWhoever said that good things don’t come in small packages has never visited >Saluda, NC – the quaint and charming home to The Orchard Inn.  Nestled in the lush North Carolina mountains, Saluda is an artistic, interesting, and historic town with plenty to catch one’s eye and hold one’s attention.  With many original buildings still standing, Saluda remains a testimony to its railroad and commerce history.  As summer is winding down, August is the perfect month to come to your favorite bed and breakfast and enjoy the incredible musical events occurring in and around our special little town.  Here are just a few August events in the Asheville area.

First of all, come out to Chimney Rock State Park on August 11th and enjoy the breezy, bluesy, bluegrass tunes of Grits & Soul and the Swayback Sisters from noon ‘til 3:00 pm.  Music is a major contributing factor in Appalachian history and there’s no better way to appreciate its beauty then to steep oneself in it while out in the open and surrounded by the splendor of the mountains.  After all, the mountains and the lives of those who lived here are what inspired many of the trademark folksy sounds and tunes that are still hanging in the air here today.  If you’re quiet enough, you may even here the mountains sing along.

This year, The Young Men’s Institute (the YMI) is celebrating its 120th anniversary at the Cultural Center at Pack Place, Asheville’s Education, Arts, & Science Center from August 22nd to 25th.  The YMI Cultural Center has long been a bastion of African American art, music, and literature. This year’s special Founders Celebration kicks off with a thrilling block party on the 23rd at the YMI Cultural Center –Ray Auditorium at 39 S. Market Street in Asheville, NC.  This event is free and family friendly.  There will be food, dancing, music, and much more!  The weekend then continues and on the 25th from 3:00-6:00 pm there will be an assembly of different gospel choirs.  The fee to join this joyful get-together is only $5.00 per person and is sure to lift one’s soul and spirit!  In conjunction with this fantastic festival is the regular celebration of West African drumming and dance that occurs every Thursday night!  All are welcome to come and participate!

For more music in the mountains, the Brevard Music Center’s Annual Festival wraps up another fabulous season the first week in August.  On Thursday, August 1st, come hear Verdi’s Falstaff.  The next night, return to hear Ralph Vaughn Williams’ English Folk Song Suite and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor.  There’s more music by Ravel and Walton on Saturday night and then come on Sunday, to hear the glorious finale that ends with The Planets by Holst!
